The Romans were the greatest military and civil engineers of the ancient world and many of their roads and bridges are still in operation today. Travel and communication were based upon an extensive network of roads that linked the four corners of the empire to the city of Rome. BackgroundĪt its height, the Roman Empire extended from southwest Asia to the British Isles. In turn, they engendered a commercial revolution that would eventually change medieval society. Many of these cities evolved from successful trade fairs established along busy trade routes. 1200, Europe was in the process of changing from a medieval agricultural economy to one based upon interregional trade, which contributed to the growth of large urban centers. Ten entertainment venues will host more than 80 demonstrations and performances across the weekend highlighting life in medieval Europe and the cold North lands to the deserts of the Middle East and the Ottoman. Over 750 (yes you read that correctly!) re-enactors join the festival to showcase their skills, encampments, kit (costumes), and knowledge of the specific period of Medieval history they cover. One of the standouts of the festival is the sheer number of world-class re-enactors who come back each year.
